The Internet Sales Explosion

Internet Sales DoubleWith internet sales figures growing dramatically, more people than ever before are turning to the internet first when considering any kind of purchase – whether it’s the weekly grocery shop, the latest electronic gizmo, or this year’s summer holiday.

Internet sales have grown at a phenomenal rate in the last year.  Recent figures indicate online sales have more than doubled in the past 12 months – December sales were up 106% on last year.  It’s yet another indication of the growing popularity of shopping online:  it’s convenient, it’s quick, it’s safe, it can be done anytime, and in many cases it’s also cheaper.

Britons have really embraced the concept of online shopping, with UK sales accounting for around 40% of online sales across the whole of Europe – making us the undisputed leaders in internet shopping.  In the lead-up to Christmas, one survey (by eDigitalResearch) found 87% of respondents would be buying Christmas gifts online, whilst more than 62% planned to do ALL their Christmas shopping on the internet.

It’s hardly surprising that many choose to do their Christmas shopping online rather than battle their way through the High Street crowds.  But apparently many e-shoppers are doing the same when it comes to the post-Christmas sales, often getting a head start on traditional shoppers.

With recent figures suggesting almost two-thirds of Britons spend some time at their computer on Christmas day, many retailers are starting the sale season early for the benefit of keen e-shoppers.  For example, M&S started their online sale on Christmas day with thousands of shoppers visiting their site in the early hours of Christmas morning to snap up bargains.   Other big retailers who chose to follow this trend include Currys, Argos, and PC World.

The message is clear: if you have a product or service to sell, there’s never been a better time to get online.
